Men's golf wins second consecutive GNAC title

The Western men’s golf team won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament for the second year in a row, earning a narrow come-from-behind win April 25 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The Vikings victory came by just one stroke over second place Concordia University. Concordia carried a six-stroke lead over Western after the first two rounds, but watched the lead disappear over the second day.

“Our goal is to win regionals and then be in a good position going into nationals."

The match came down to the last round of the tournament. Senior Chris Hatch sunk a par on the last hole of the tournament to hang on to the single-stroke lead. Hatch said he didn’t know the shot was the clinching shot until afterwards. “When we signed our scorecards, that’s when we found out,” Hatch said. Hatch’s score of 67 in the second round tied for the best round of the tournament. He also finished second overall in the individual competition. Saint Martin’s’ Chris Crisologo finished first overall, besting Hatch by two strokes.

The team’s strength was their level play, Hatch said. “We were really consistent throughout the week which really helped,” Hatch said. The team will be competing at the NCAA Division II Regionals May 8 to May 10 in Stockton, California. From there, Hatch said, the team has their eyes set on nationals. “Our goal is to win regionals and then be in a good position going into nationals,” Hatch said. The national tournament will be held Monday, May 22, at the Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Florida.
