Western men’s baseball compiled 19 runs over three games to sweep its series against Portland State University. The three-game series started on Saturday, April 22 with a close 2-1 win in seven innings against the Portland State Vikings. Senior head coach and first baseman Conner Celli said Portland State had a solid performance.

“[Portland State] had some good pitchers with good off-speed [pitches],” Celli said. “They really kept our hitters off-balance, and overall they had energy throughout the game.” Western won the second game 11-1 with a strong hitting performance from junior third baseman Alexander Smith, who drove in two runs with a triple in the bottom of the fourth inning. “I struggled in the beginning of the season a little bit, so it was nice to come out and be able to perform,” Smith said. “It was good to get the momentum going into the end of the game, and be able to execute on it and finish off strong.” On Sunday, April 23, Western continued its win streak with a 6-1 victory in the final game of the series. Western is now second in the conference with a record of 13-2.
